Our brand new eBook, featuring everything you need to know about SIBO
Ever wondered if you may be suffering from SIBO? What the symptoms, treatments, and diagnostic tests are? Find out in our new eBook.
We kick off the book by discussing what SIBO is, as well as the different types of SIBO, including hydrogen-SIBO, hydrogen-sulfide-SIBO, and intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO). SIBO can cause uncomfortable digestive conditions such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. However, it can be difficult to diagnose as these symptoms are non-specific and overlap with many other gut health conditions, such as IBS and food intolerances.
What is SIBO?
The diverse community of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract is known as the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome has a mutually beneficial relationship with the human body – the gut microbiome contributes to food breakdown, nutrient production, protection from invading bacteria, and immune system support.
An imbalance in the gut microbiome is called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis is thought to contribute to a wide range of diseases – it is speculated that not only can dysbiosis cause illness, but diseases can also lead to dysbiosis through various mechanisms. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a type of dysbiosis caused by the overgrowth of certain bacteria in the small intestine – basically bacteria growing where they shouldn’t be! Our stomach acid and food movement through the gastrointestinal tract keep control of the growth of bacteria in the small intestine. However, any impairment of these protective mechanisms can lead to bacterial overgrowth.
It is thought that up to 1 in 7 of us may have SIBO, and up to 80% of IBS patients may also have SIBO. The symptoms of the two conditions are very similar, but it remains uncertain whether SIBO could cause IBS symptoms, or if SIBO is more likely to develop in those with IBS. One condition may worsen the other, leading to a cycle of chronic gut problems.
What is inside our SIBO eBook?
SIBO symptoms include bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. These symptoms are non-specific, meaning that they could be associated with other gastrointestinal conditions. Because of this, symptoms alone cannot be used as a diagnosis, and further testing is required.
The use of non-invasive breath tests is becoming more and more popular in clinical settings. If you have SIBO, the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine ferments food sources (like sugars), resulting in hydrogen and methane gas production. These gases are then absorbed into the blood where they can make their way into the lungs to be exhaled in the breath.
Our eBook explores different topics such as the different types of bacterial overgrowth (such as methane SIBO), how the condition can be diagnosed, and how it can be managed for improved gut health. We also answer important questions such as:
- What are SIBO symptoms?
- How does SIBO treatment work and what different treatment options are there?
- How do I know if it’s SIBO or IBS?
Once you have received a diagnosis, treatment and preventing a recurrence of SIBO can be difficult to navigate. We have made this easier for you in our eBook, with clear sections on managing your condition through many different avenues, to improve your overall gut health.
With over 30 pages of educational content, our eBook concludes with information all about OMED Health and how we can help you on your gut health journey.
