Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) both affect the gut, and cause similar symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. SIBO is more common in IBS patients than healthy people, suggesting there is a significant link between the two conditions.
We are excited to see OMED Health’s Medical Advisor Dr. Rui Lopes featured on the Vitality PRO podcast, on the episode ‘The Innovative Breath Test for SIBO, IBS, and Gut Health’. Dr. Lopes helps us guide and advise our patients on their journey toward optimized gut health.
During the podcast, Dr. Lopes discusses how lots of people have heard of SIBO, but not a lot of people know what it is. SIBO is when there is a change in the composition, density, and function of the microbes that live in our small intestine, specifically an overpopulation of bacteria in the small intestine that are usually found in the large intestine, or the mouth and throat.
Dr. Lopes highlights that around 1 in 7 of us could be suffering from SIBO, but the condition is particularly prevalent in those who have underlying conditions such as IBS. There are a wide range of factors that can cause SIBO to develop, including impaired gut motility, abnormalities in the structure of the gastrointestinal tract, and disruptions to the microbiome from antibiotic use. We must understand these factors to diagnose and treat SIBO effectively.
Dr. Lopes then discusses how breath tests are used to diagnose SIBO, and how the OMED Health Breath Analyzer and App can be used to transform how we manage our gut health conditions, from longitudinal monitoring to tracking symptom response to different treatments. It is exciting for us to see our device showcased on such a prominent platform, to help spread awareness about how we can support your gut health.
